The one I made years ago just used cotenteditible="true", document.execCommand(), and for all the controls. My sites all have strict Content-Security-Policy that doesn't allow inline scripts or styles, disables eval(), and they require TrustedTypes (which is a whole other story). Plus, with the strict security on my sites, I doubt anything would remain functional.
